Beef Rendang Pau @ Pau Kassim, Taman Pasir Putih

I love to eat Pau. It’s a steamed bun with wide assortment of filling such as red bean paste, kaya paste, chicken curry, beef rendang, chocolate and many others. Probably the best pau is made by Chinese and quite difficult to savour good pau from Malays.

A good pau must be fluffy or “gebu, it has to be total white to reflect its purity. The skin should be porous and able to peel off before you can see and taste the gorgeous fluffy flesh of pau. That’s why whenever you see they opened the cover of steam cooker, resulting involuntarily severe salivation. I love to eat the skin first before enjoyed the rest of the pau.

There’s one street stall at Taman Pasir Puteh that can be considered serve a good malay pau in Pasir Gudang vicinity. They are called Pau Kassim.

Fluffy Pau
Beef Rendang was among the best pau they served. Beside the pau itself the most important is the filling. Personally I like red bean pau, but here the beef rendang is better. It has generous filling with full of chunky beef meat inside the pau. Totally feel like Hari Raya is around the corner.  Two piece of Pau can make you skip dinner already. I’m stuffed.

Borneo Lamb Stew @ The Borneo Cafe

Mother’s day eve, take all family for dinner. We headed to Pasir Gudang when we heard a restaurant that served very good western dish.  Arrived around 8:00pm, no customer, probably we’re the first at that time.  Find a good spot inside the cafĂ© just in front of the LCD TV. First impression, wow nice decoration, all concept, ornament and embellishment came from Borneo. We can see drawing, handcraft and many other things, look traditional. Nice touch, western food with Borneo setting.

Borneo Concept
So I ordered Borneo Stew, Grilled Chicken Chop for my daughters. My wife wants Beef Steak and Pineapple Fried Rice for my mother.

Borneo Stew
This lamb stew served with mashed potato and meat loaf. The meat is tender that can falls off the bone easily.  Wish that the lamb shank should have more meat. Then it would be satisfying.  The stew tasted great and I cannot wait to slurp the bone marrow but beware too much of this can make your head spinning.

Grilled Chicken Chop

This grilled chicken chop served with French fries, coleslaw, tasty black pepper sauce and chilli sauce. The chicken marinated with their special herbs and spices then grilled into tender and juicy. My children really love it.

Chicken Rice @ Lan Coffee House

If you’re lookin’ for Chicken Rice in Pasir Gudang, one of the best spot for this popular local dish probably at Taman Mawar called Lan Coffee House.  In the past, this dish was so popular among Chinese but now it became local hit among all the races.

The preparations of the rice are almost the same, but most of the people will give more particular attention on how to prepare the chicken. Malay style towards honey chicken and Chinese must be the Hainanese chicken. However as the time goes by, modification were made to suit the preferences of the locals. But this particular Malay restaurant is more towards to Chinese style chicken rice.

At Lan Coffee House, you’re assured of a sumptuous meal of chicken rice, hot bowl of soup and large portion of chicken piece (make sure to request for special, double portion).

Special Chicken Rice

The rice is fragrant, the soup tasted great and the chicken is soft and pleasantly tender too.  The chilli sauce also added more kick into this wonderful simple dish.  Simply scrumptious.

Ice Tea with Asam Boi

Cool ice tea with sour flavor of asam boi, what a great taste!

Beware, this place totally jam-packed during Lunch hour.

Price : Chicken Rice Rm3.50 ; Special Chicken Rice RM5.50

Chocolate Apam Balik @ Usup's Apam Balik Stall

Out of the blue, I just a craving for Apam Balik.

Apam Balik quite synonym with Malaysia fast food snack, beside Pisang Goreng this is one of the favourite snack during tea break or a must buy list at Pasar Malam.

Apam Balik is a soft and fluffy pancake folded over grinded peanut, sugar, butter and sweet corn. Nowadays you can choose so many flavors for Apam Balik such as Chocolate, Black Glutinous Rice and coconut.  My favourite is original Apam Balik or sometime Chocolate Apam Balik.

There’s one stall selling quite tasty Apam Balik. The Apam Balik so fluffy and yet the skin is crispy. Just bite softly, feel the crunchy peanut, creamy chocolate, sweet corn and buttery taste of butter lingered around your mouth. What a feeling! Shiok nyer….

For a long time we have been served with Chicken Rice until few years back when Ayam Penyet start to penetrate our land….I’m hooked. Now, being a huge fan of this dish. There are so many places selling these days and it’s become very hard to sift out the best among the rest.

But yet we discovered new gem just nearby my workplace…

Ayam Penyet

Head Banging, Mouth Firing Sambal Belacan
This particular stall actually selling Asam Pedas but also churns out splendid ayam penyet.  The chicken is superbly fried until crispy and yet the flesh is so tender and juicy. It also comes with generous amount of hot spicy, mouth firing sambal belacan. Totally under fire…..blaze off.

And yet I’m quite amazed with my friend‘s plate of sambal was completely clean…even asked for more.

Fried Banana @ Makcik Ahnessa Stall, P.Gudang

Not every fried banana sold at the street stall are the same. Taste and look depends on how ripe the banana, mixture of flour and other ingredients to coat the banana and oil they use to fry ‘em.  Simply delicious snack during tea break.

I ate so many fried bananas cross the country, even in Singapore but yet this fried banana is totally amazing. It got that exquisite taste and aroma. They use special concoction of several ingredients together and fry with sesame seeds.  After deep fried, this banana will become so crispy and crunchy.

See the tiny sesame seeds
Nevertheless, this fried banana looks awful…like overcook or what??? How I wish they could improve on fresh banana selection quality, otherwise it would be perfect

So we ordered our special drinks, Chamek Signature…BANCAU.

3 Layers BANCAU

Bancau is combination of Sirap Bandung “consists of milk flavoured with rose cordial syrup” and Grass Jelly or normally we called cincau. So the name came from BANDUNG + CINCAU = BANCAU

Nasi Beriyani @ Restoran Sasa, P.Gudang

Before Friday’s Prayer, We had  lunch at Restaurant Sasa, Located at Kompleks Pusat Bandar Pasir Gudang. Quite a big place, you won’t miss this place if you drive through the main road. This Restaurant serves variety of foods, so much that won’t know how to choose. Today will skip Nasi Campur and planned to savour ourselves with Nasi Beriyani with Mutton instead

It’s amazing how people travel for food. Sometimes, I even went all the way to different state or cross border to Singapore just to quell that crave for Nasi Beriyani. I do have my favourite place like Arab Street in Singapore or Nasi Beriyani Gam in JB, but this time we cover at Pasir Gudang Area.

Nasi Beriyani with Mutton Kurma

Just imagine this tempting nasi beriyani with a delicate flavoursome taste that only calls for a nice firm of bite. I was entice the moment I put the rice into my mouth..fragrant, light, fluffy, with nuances of spices, herbs and condiment.  It’s tasted just right, not too strong of saffron and pair with a good sized piece of tender mutton braised in and all tasty kurma spices.  Fastasticto….

It goes with Dalca with decent amount of vege, Pineapple Patcheri “ Paceri nenas” and some keropok.  Pineapple Patcheri is cuisines that gives a sweet taste to the rice and add more flavors to this delightful dish.

You cannot miss..the only highrise building in P.Gudang
Nevertheless, this still not be the best nasi Beriyani I’d tasted before…but probably among the best in Pasir Gudang area. If you drop by to Pasir Gudang, do try during lunch hour  at this restaurant, probably serve only on Friday.

Ayam Penyet @ Lina Dollah

Ayam Penyet or Smashed Chicken in English is one of the fantastic authentic Indonesian Food.  The taste of Ayam Penyet kept me remembered the nostalgic feeling when I ate my first Ayam Penyet about 4 years ago at Banafe, JB. The taste was so exquisite. Chicken pieces are fried to a crispy perfection before been smashed, and the superb highly spicy hot peri peri is a cannot-miss for spicy food lovers.

Nowadays, there are so many shops & stalls selling Ayam Penyet. So many variation and which one is the original? So popular, even have fast food restaurant called Ayam Penyet Ria in Indonesia, Already opened in KL at Sunway Pyramid last year but too far away, rather cross border to Singapore, way more convenient.

Today had a chance to have lunch at one of the popular kebayan spot at Taman Mawar (Hawker Centre) that sell Ayam Penyet.  We ordered Ayam Penyet and Air Katira

4 stalls in a row
Ayam Penyet
Soup & White Rice

This Ayam Penyet is a combination of smashed fried chicken , fried tempe, fried taufu, Cabbage, Slice Cucumber,  Long Bean, Daun Salam, half calamansi and belinjau crackers serve with hot boiled rice and soup. The chicken was fried with spices and was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, and we mopped up every last bit of the chicken batter dripping. This came with a kickass sambal chillies.

The sambal is super hot sometimes so I just did a little baby dip into it. But nevertheless, it was still hot for me. Always scratching my head.  Surprisingly, my friend’s plate of sambal was wiped dry…

Overall it tastes good and went well with Air katira. A green color drink with katira, selasih like tadpole, malva nut or kembang semangkuk and small pieces of dates. The taste was really exquisite especially to cool down the spicy heat. Fuhhhh…

Air Katira

The price is reasonable about RM5 for Ayam Penyet and RM1.50 for Air Katira. So hurry, must go and try..
