Supreme Curry Mee @ Old Town Kopitiam

It’s time for lunch again, inside wallet only got few notes…lazy to withdraw money, many people queued so we opt to Makan place that accept credit card. My friends proposed to eat at Old Town Kopitiam. Quite a good option, anyway It’s seem long time haven’t tasted their Curry Mee.

Old Town White Coffee Kopitiam established in 1958, one year after independence. Located at Jalan Tun Sambanthan in Ipoh Old Town. They are among the biggest kopitiam chain in Malaysia with 176 stores ( as at March 2011 ).

Just like Starbuck and Coffee Bean…In Malaysia also we have top gun of coffee shop that serve country best brewed coffee like Kluang Railway, Kemaman Hai Peng and Ipoh Old Town.

Old Town Tesco Seri Alam, Masai

Four of us had same dish that is Old Town Supreme Curry Mee, a big brother of Old Town Curry Mee. Beside bigger bowl, you get a piece of chicken instead of shredded chicken slice. For certain people maybe this dish will make them sweat but not for us. We have undergone training slurping and eating head banging mouth firing sambal belacan before, so this one was nothing unusual..

Supreme Curry Mee
The yellow noodle along with big portion of curry chicken, fishcake “ I hate fishcake and fishball”, taufu and long beans mix well together in a big bowl of curry soup smeared with a layer of chilli oil. The broth not so thick but still enough to kick in my appetite. Tasted wonderful, but need to search for other place before make a comparison.

Kaya & Butter Toast Double

After finished slurping the curry mee, we had their famous Kaya and Butter Toast. This savoury toasted bread is a must in Old Town. A thick layer of Kaya spread with a thick block of butter sandwiched in two layer of crispy brown toast. Totally Buttery ecstasy….Mumma Mia…

My buttery dreamland came into an end…this kopitiam did not accept credit card, wah lau wehh. My friend who proposed this place already went to toilet. Luckily my other friends bring extra money. Save from that awkward moment…

Anyway, Old Town Kopitiam ..simply a must try. The foods and the ambience were really nice and cozy but nothing is the same as good as old days right?

Old Town Philosophy.."Take your time, Savour every moment”

Ayam Penyet @ Resepi Angah PG, Pasir Gudang

For a long time we have been served with Chicken Rice until few years back when Ayam Penyet start to penetrate our land….I’m hooked. Now, being a huge fan of this dish. There are so many places selling these days and it’s become very hard to sift out the best among the rest.

But yet we discovered new gem just nearby my workplace…

Ayam Penyet

Head Banging, Mouth Firing Sambal Belacan
This particular stall actually selling Asam Pedas but also churns out splendid ayam penyet.  The chicken is superbly fried until crispy and yet the flesh is so tender and juicy. It also comes with generous amount of hot spicy, mouth firing sambal belacan. Totally under fire…..blaze off.

And yet I’m quite amazed with my friend‘s plate of sambal was completely clean…even asked for more.

You can enjoy this Ayam Penyet  for only  RM5

Raspberry CheeseCake @ Secret Recipe

I don’t know many places that serve almost perfect cakes or cheesecake except Secret Recipe.  Last week we had a chance to treat ourselves at Secret Recipe. Everybody chose a cake…cream cake and cheesecake.  Nothing to say about their cream cake…still the best, very smooth and delicious.

Chocolate Strawberry

Tiramisu

Hazel Cheese
But cheesecake….ohh cheesecake…Who doesn’t love cheesecake?  The creamy filling and crisp crust is a decadent on its own. But when you add with some flavors as filling, this dessert becomes irresistible.

Raspberry Cheesecake
Secret Recipe’s cheesecake is so dense, smooth filling, creamy, rich and tangy….enough said made me totally awe…next time will try all the cheesecake on the house and then I will select my favourite

As their tag line….”life is sweet”

Until then…..

GearBox Soup @ Kg Pasir Puteh

Mostly recognized soup stall in Pasir Gudang,  It’s a corner lot terrace house. It’s very difficult nowadays to find good place for soup especially combination of Malay and Indian herbs and spices…sometime you only get bland soup, just taste only beef or chicken broth.

I prefer thick soup with hot spicy spices…not to forget spicy soy sauce for enhance flavor.  We can have many choices of part to be taken with soup but my favorites are mutton, gearbox and cheek or combination of all.

Gearbox + Cheek Soup

I ordered gearbox soup plus cheek. Good first impression, the soup quite thick and can smell the fragrant of spices and herbs. Add a couple of spoonful of spicy chilli padi soy sauce. Splendid. One of the best soup in Pasir Gudang Area.

If you travel to Pasir Puteh, there are so many restaurants in that vicinity…don’t forget to try this soup during lunch hour. This stall also sell Chicken Rice...

Ayam Penyet @ Zona Johor Jaya ( Ex-Banafe )

I did mention in my previous post, my first ayam penyet was at Banafe in 2008. Now Banafe still serves Ayam Penyet but not the one that I tasted before…We knew that they moved to Johor Jaya and rented one stall at one of the biggest Family Food Court in Johor Jaya. This Family Food Court just opposite to Daiman Bowling and share same street with The Store Johor Jaya.

Yesterday I’d chance to recall again that nostalgic feeling to savour that infamous Ayam Penyet in JB. Full House, waited for 5 minutes before we could grab an empty table.

Published in Chinese Newspaper
My family settled for Ayam Penyet, I took both Ayam Penyet and Pecel Lele…too greedy to miss..

Ayam Penyet
This ayam penyet still carried the same and consistently taste. Not only is the chicken tender and juicy, along with the super sinfully crispy skin. It also comes with superb sambal belacan, and generous amount of vegetables/salad like cucumber, daun selasih, don’t know in English probably like asian Basil…, cabbage, kacang botol “winged bean”, half lime and fried tauhu. The Sambal not as spicy as before maybe they wants to cater more Chinese customer, but according to the owner, brother Nik, he said the spiciness depends on the monsoon season. If raining season than the chillies not that spicy….don’t know whether true or not?? Anybody can confirm??

Pecel Lele " Catfish "
Pecel lele, It’s a Fried Ikan keli or catfish…crunchy and crispy skin with soft and moist fish flesh. So tremendously irresistible…

Overall, tasted very good, hopefully they can maintain their sambal belacan as delicious and spicy as before. So everybody, do not hesitate to come to this stall located at Johor Jaya Family Food Court, do not worry because there is an allocation for Muslim Stall in that food court. Definitely Halal. So Die Die must try!

Good Ambience
Nice place to hang out and chit chat, have mini concert at the other side of the food court…got playground for children. Good spot, Totally Family FoodCourt.

Price : RM 7.00

Asam Pedas @ Seri Kintan Cafe

My colleague recommends newly open ASAM PEDAS Restaurant at Kg. Pasir Puteh. So I decided to give it a try whether it’s up to the hype.

Not crowded, grab a seat and we ordered asam pedas  Ikan Merah and Ikan Kaci , Fried Chicken with herbs, Kangkung Belacan and Omelette.  First thing, service wise not very good, it took almost 40 minutes before the food arrived. Damn Starving and furious…but still we waited patiently.

Food arrived, Asam Pedas, Kang Kung Belacan and Fried Chicken only….no omelette? We just kept quiet,  Never mind…can do without it.

Asam Pedas Ikan Merah " Red Snapper"

Fried Chicken with Herbs

Kang Kung Belacan "Water Spinanch"
Foodwise, taste quite normal, just like a typical asam pedas, nothing to shout about. But the fish portion was quite generous. I got two slices of Ikan Merah. Not bad. Kangkung Belacan and Fried Chicken in Herbs tasted so so only.

Price depends on Market Fish Price ( RM 8 ~ RM 10 )

Fried Banana @ Makcik Ahnessa Stall, P.Gudang

Not every fried banana sold at the street stall are the same. Taste and look depends on how ripe the banana, mixture of flour and other ingredients to coat the banana and oil they use to fry ‘em.  Simply delicious snack during tea break.

I ate so many fried bananas cross the country, even in Singapore but yet this fried banana is totally amazing. It got that exquisite taste and aroma. They use special concoction of several ingredients together and fry with sesame seeds.  After deep fried, this banana will become so crispy and crunchy.

See the tiny sesame seeds
Nevertheless, this fried banana looks awful…like overcook or what??? How I wish they could improve on fresh banana selection quality, otherwise it would be perfect

Mee Rebus Hj. Wahid @ Restoran N & Z, Taman Rinting

This afternoon, everything went quite well in factory. So decided to treat ourselves with so called Hj. Wahid’s Mee Rebus. Have operated since Pasar Bahru Market days ( Now, City Square ). The descendents of Hj Wahid open so many branches throughout  JB area. Larkin Bus Stop, Plaza Kotaraya, Plaza Angsana and etc.  We had our lunch at one the branches, Restoran N & Z in Taman Rinting, Masai.

Hj Wahid's Mee Rebus at Taman Rinting

Hj. Wahid’s Mee Rebus was so popular that even aired in Majalah Tiga, TV3 programmed and published  in several newspaper.

Mee Rebus
This dish among the oldest and original Mee Rebus that I’d ever tasted. The yellow noodles & taugeh are blanched nicely. Very thick gravy with rich aroma taste.  The gravy tasted sweetish and slight spicy and topped with fresh chillies, one hardboiled egg cut into half, fried shallots,  fried fritters and half fresh lime. You can add soy sauce for extra umphh...Totally awesome.

Somehow, still find it strange though, my friend told me that different branch got slightly different taste…will try to find the truth…

Chicken Rice
Beside, Mee Rebus, Chicken Rice selling here also not bad..it’s normal chicken rice with roasted chicken marinated with soy sauce, honey and extra other things…the chicken is tender and juicy, sweetish taste probably due to honey. Serve together with Chicken based soup, Special Chillies Sambal and some vegetables cucumber and salad. Not that authentic but still got good taste and worth a try.

Soto
My friend ordered Soto, simple one. Only problem that the soup doesn’t taste right…more like Bakso, Indonesian soup using beef broth as a based soup…simply cannot make it for me.

Satisfied Customer
If you drop by to JB, please try this Hj. Wahid’s Mee Rebus..they have so many branches, should be no problem to find one..

Price RM3.50 Mee Rebus & Soto, Rojak RM3.00

Nasi Lemak Rosmerah @ Johor Jaya

Yesterday, my brother went to Mumbai for his company railway project.  My mom send him off at KLIA and came back all the way back to Johor by Bus. Picked her up at Larkin’s Bus Station around 7:15pm. My daughters insist to have Ayam Penyet at J.Jaya for dinner but we had Nasi Lemak instead.

Our destination was Nasi Lemak Rosmerah at Johor Jaya opposite to Public Bank and nearby the J.Jaya Police Station.

Nasi Lemak with Fried Chicken, Sambal, Cucumber & Sambal Sotong

Nowadays we can eat Nasi Lemak all day long, normally used to be eaten only during breakfast.  Nasi Lemak became more and more versatile and serves with so many sub dishes.  Nasi Lemak literally means “Fatty Rice”. The rice is soaked in coconut milk or cream that attributed to high content of Fat and sugar. Nevertheless…the taste is superb. You need to taste it otherwise you will be missing a lot.

Nasi Lemak Rosmerah can be considered as one the best I’ve tasted so far. The Steam Rice so fluffy with enhance fragrance from combination of Pandan leave and spices like ginger and lemon grass. The killer dish was their Fried Chicken. It’s definitely finger lickin’ good. Some people just take away the fried chicken only. The Chicken was so damn crispy coated with special herbs and spices. It sure makes my mouth watering.

The Sambal also quite unique taste…it goes well with Steam rice and Fried Chicken.  I should not take Sambal Sotong “Cuttlefish Sambal”.  Not good approached to have 2 sambal tastes at one time. Next time should focus on originality…..Steam Rice, Sambal, Boiled or Omelet Egg, Fried Chicken, Cucumber, Fried Anchovies and Peanuts.

Relaxing....Night View
Nice ambience, outdoor stall but definitely cannot lepak or stay for long since everybody is looking for an empty table.  Good food, nice authentic and original taste…definitely recommended.

Bancau @ Chamek Kopitiam, Pasir Gudang

Weather was hot, need some good beverage to quench our thirst. Since we were still in Kompleks P.Bandar P.Gudang, we decided to take a break at Chamek Kopitiam.

Origin from Malay kampung in Kluang
Chamek Kopitiam, P.Gudang

So we ordered our special drinks, Chamek Signature…BANCAU.

3 Layers BANCAU

Bancau is combination of Sirap Bandung “consists of milk flavoured with rose cordial syrup” and Grass Jelly or normally we called cincau. So the name came from BANDUNG + CINCAU = BANCAU

Despite it’s novelty, the taste is pretty normal, only the cooling effects that counts..Especially black cincau that known to reduce body temperature, fever and prevent indigestion.
